In May 2022, five rural municipalities in Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central — Barranquitas, Ciales, Morovis, Orocovis, and Villalba — were the first communities in Puerto Rico to receive SolSmart designation! The communities celebrated their achievements at an event event in Orocovis.
- Participation in trainings on permitting, planning, zoning, and inspection needs for solar in the community.
- Orocovis is part of the Mountain Energy Consortium, and has formed an agreement with the Electric Power Authority to install solar at the Toro Negro Hydroelectric Plant. The Mountain Energy Consortium meets regularly to discuss solar matters.
I am proud that Orocovis and so many neighboring municipalities in Puerto Rico’s Central Mountain Range are actively supporting the expansion of solar energy in our communities. This is one step closer to helping our Island achieve 100% clean energy use by the year 2050.
